So unlike me....

I cannot wait to get out in the dirt, cultivate it, and begin to grow a vegetable garden. I only have four problems.

1) I hate bees - with a passion - I am scared to death of them. I always run wildly away from them, only realizing after the fact, that I left my child behind to fend them off on their own.
2) I hate the heat - 'nuff said.
3) WEEDS! They are everywhere and they are eternal!
4) I have very limited space - but it's enough to work with, I guess.

I'll have to grow somethings in pots and some up high in my yard on a terraced hill. Great fun - good times.

Yesterday, a friend of mine told me that the cannery is out of wheat until the fall. My dad also told me that they are completely out of #10 cans. I have no idea when they'll get more. I know that the prophets have always told us to have a garden, and if my wonderful mother-in-law can grow stuff on her third story apartment balcony in milk jugs while they were on their mission, I can do something here.

I also wish we had land for a few chickens, a couple of cows, and maybe a pig or two. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, bacon. I would love to be self-sufficient if we had to be.

I am hoping to grow corn, strawberries, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, raspberries, watermelon, and I have room for one or two more small things. For some reason, zucchini and yellow squash always die on me.
Does anyone have any ideas of what else to plant? Nothing gross allowed such as eggplant or turnips.

Too bad these can't grow in the garden.

Or these.

I've never seen any one more scared of bees. It is one of the funniest, first memories I have of you. Bailing on everyone around-just to save yourself.
And bounce dryer sheets? pinned to the back of yur shirt? You shuld have a little section on your blog on how to fend them off.

tips on gardening.
grow expensive items like raspberries, specialty tomatoes, flowers & asparagus.

above ground is great. less bending.

Lehi wind is outrageous. protect wee plants.

make children weed.

a gardening class at Thanksgiving Point is totally worth the money.

happy digging.

p.s. out of wheat? seriously?

In all my experience with garnening:),I never have any kind of luck with corn. That is a vegetable that needs to be planted in a big group. My favorite things to plant are all the ingredients needed to make salsa. Fresh and canned. I love homemade salsa. I also like to plant peas and green bean. Both are easy to grow and I like to blanch them and put them in freezer bags to be enjoyed later in the year when it's hard to pay the price for fresh veggies. So, do I sound like Martha Stewart? If only!
Good luck with the bee fear. My only suggestion to that is to wait till after dusk to go check out all your goodies, then you wont have to deal with the bees and it wont be hot anymore.
Have fun playing in the dirt!

We can't wait for our garden! You have plenty of space... we're going to plant: onions, tomatoes, jalapinos, eggplant, brocolli, maybe some zuchinni, blueberries, maybe a few strawberries and maybe some carrots. That's pretty much all I can think of, except maybe potatoes, oh yeah and spinach. Hope that gives you some ideas!

PS: Brent's parents have a pressure cooker and they can/jar everything. So they don't have to get the #10 cans. They also have a giant deep freezer and they freeze their own corn and brocolli and such from their garden for a long time. We love our "big" freezer... it's helped me shop only once a month! I freeze our milk, bread, meat. But I also, once we're in our house, plan on getting big ol fat cans of chicken, chili, ready to eat soup and stuff to hide under beds and in closets for food storage... if we have a disaster before we move, we're just dead. So don't feel bad about not being prepared, we're pretty much all behind!

You crack me up!! i would love a garden but our little friends(deer) love anything that is green. So if you get too many tomatoes that you don't know what to do with...call me :) What about cucumbers? Did you mention pumpkins? My grandpa said anyone can grow a pumpkin and squaush. He always had a ton of them. one of his squash could last you all year it was that big. Good luck!

We had something last year called a crenshaw melon - a hybrid of a canteloupe and Watermelon. Very ripe like watermelon, but colored and flavored like a canteloupe. Very tasty.

I can't wait to have a yard to grown things...Ummm, mostly flowers probably.. :) Our growing season is well, short...But with 22 hours of sunlight, things grow fast and big...I've never grown veggies, but the flowers are amazing. (not mine so much, but others!!:) Good luck!!

I highly enjoy planting (among other things) peas, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, and this year am going to try celery maybe. The peas take all the space you will give them, but none of the rest really require much.
